Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard and former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt re-ignited their rivalry on Wednesday, but it was a different affair altogether as neither of them had their cleats on. The two former players, currently in-charge of their club's youth sides, were seen pacing along the touchline as they screamed instructions during the UEFA Youth League round-of-16 tie between the two sides.
It was Gerrard who tasted success on the night as his boys defeated United 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinal. Captain Ben Woodburn put Liverpool ahead with a header in the 11th minute while substitute Rafael Camacho sealed the deal with a lovely curler from the edge of the box in the 77th minute to set up a last-eight clash against Manchester City.
Gerrard was thrilled with the win and admitted it meant a lot to him. "All in all, I think we dominated Manchester United today, and we have some very young players in the team so that was the pleasing thing for me," he said to Evening Standard . “The reason I want this challenge is because I can’t go and find it myself as a player anymore,” he added.
Butt, on the other hand, wasn't too pleased with his boys' performance. "It was disappointing to go out, it was a good competition to stay in," he said. "We had a lot of talent on the pitch and showed we are not a bad team but we got hit with a sucker-punch," he remarked.
