Amateur teenage golfer Avani Prashanth qualifies for Asian Games

In the men's section, Viraj Madappa and Rashid Khan kept their nerves and held their rivals at bay to earn the coveted berths in golf after a gruelling five-round affair.

Viraj Madappa, Rashid Khan and Avani Prashanth qualified for the Asian Games at the conclusion of the IGU Asian Games golf selection trials held at KGA here on Saturday.

Madappa and Rashid, who finished in the top two in the men's category, will join Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma in the Indian men's contingent at the Asian Games.

Avani Prashanth, a 15-year amateur from Bengaluru, put on a superb show to finish on top of the women's leaderboard. Avani will join Aditi Ashok and Tvesa Malik in the Indian women's contingent. The selection trial was held over five rounds, with the best four rounds considered for the final overall card. Lahiri, Shubhankar, Aditi and Tvesa - the country's leading players - had already earned direct spots for the Asian Games. The Asian Games will commence at Hangzhou (China) on September 10.
