Johnson breaks into top three at McIlroy's expense

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson has climbed back into the world's top three following his victory at Oakmont on Sunday.

Johnson finally ended his long wait for a first major title as he recorded a three-shot win from the Republic of Ireland's Shane Lowry, however his success was not without controversy.

Early in his final round the 31-year-old Johnson appeared to cause his ball to move ahead of his putt, but tournament officials refused to make a ruling on a potential penalty until the end of the round.

Eventually it mattered little as Johnson finished four shots clear of Lowry, who climbs 16 places to number 25, after a round of 69, meaning the one-shot penalty proved irrelevant.

Johnson's triumph sees him climb three places in the world rankings — moving above Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler — to equal his highest spot, achieved after his performance at last year's U.S. Open.

Jason Day remains world number one after finishing in a tie for eighth, while Jordan Spieth holds onto second place despite his nine-over for the tournament.

For McIlroy — who missed the cut in Pennsylvania — it is the first time he has been out of the top three since July 2014.

Meanwhile, Branden Grace and Sergio Garcia moved closer to the top 10 after sharing fifth place at Oakmont, the pair carding par scores after their four rounds.
