Valentino Rossi was 14th on the grid while Lorenzo was 16th.

Yamaha pair Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were left to lament the team's struggles after Friday free practice at Sachsenring, where the latter took a tumble in the wet conditions.

Rossi was all the way back in 14th in second free practice for the German MotoGP, while defending champion Lorenzo was two places behind.

No Yamaha rider - four in total - finished inside the top 10, as they struggled to adapt to the wet and unexpectedly cold conditions.

"It was a difficult day because the weather was very bad. This made everything more difficult, and also more dangerous, because also the soft option for the front [tyre] is a bit too hard for this temperature," Rossi said.

"Our potential is nothing special. Looks like today, all the Yamahas are struggling with the front. We don't have enough feeling with the front, especially on the right, especially at turn 11, but also on the other right corners.

"At the end, I wasn't able to make a lap pushing at 100 per cent. So I am in a bad position. I never have the feeling to push. I have the clear feeling if I try more, I can lose the front.

"We have to try to be faster and more competitive."

His team-mate Lorenzo added: "Today we saw that all the Yamahas struggled with these conditions. No Yamaha was in the top 10 and I struggled a little bit more because with no grip and after the crash this morning it was difficult to push and to trust the bike.

"At this moment we are not competitive in any area. Neither braking, the middle of the corner - because the electronic together with low grip is not reacting smoothly - and then also in acceleration we don't have grip.

"That's why we were are 1.5 seconds slower."
