Having made his debut in a friendly defeat to Australia in February 2003, Rooney became his country's youngest-ever goalscorer in a Euro 2004 qualifying match in Skopje.
The 18-year-old lit up the EURO 2004 by bulldozing past opponents at will. He scored four goals in the tournament, including two against Croatia in the group stages.
After England's failure to defeat Croatia which forced it out of EURO 2008, Rooney's goal ensured that a repeat result wouldn't halt the Three Lions' procession into World Cup 2010.
Having been suspended for England's opening two matches, Rooney made the telling impact in a tough game against the host nation, nodding the ball home from a Steven Gerrard free-kick three minutes after half-time.
Rooney scored from the spot to go past Sir Bobby Charlton's long-held goal scoring record for the Three Lions. He ended his career with 53 goals.
