Anish Bhanwala wins rapid fire gold

Anish Bhanwala helped India sustain its gold hunt as he bagged the rapid fire pistol gold in the Junior World Cup shooting in Sydney on Monday.

The 15-year-old Anish who had won the gold in standard pistol and silver in sports pistol in the Junior World Championship in Suhl last year, qualified with 585 and beat Cheng Zhipeng of China 29-27 in the final.

Anish had missed the final of the World Cup in Guadalajara, Mexico, earlier in the same event, was in robust form this time, as his qualification score was eight points better than the next best.

Anhad Jawanda made his second final, following air pistol, and missed a medal by two points.

The Indian teams bagged the silver and bronze medals to help India consolidate its position in the second spot of the medals table with six gold, three silver and six bronze for a total of 15.

China was on top with 17 medals, including seven gold. Italy was third with two gold and a bronze. Australia, Chinese Taipei, Hungary, Thailand, Finland and Britain were the other countries to get on to the medals table.

In women’s skeet, Ganemat Sekhon shot 58 after three rounds of 17, 20 and 21 to give herself a chance to qualify for the final. Two more rounds will be followed by the final for the top six.
