Vijay Kumar won silver in rapid fire pistol in the London Olympics in 2012.

Olympic silver medallist Vijay Kumar’s seven-year fight to get a matching post along the lines of other medallists finally came through as the Himachal Pradesh government assured him of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) post.

“I had talked to the Himachal Chief Minister about other Olympics medallists having good positions and that there was a provision in the state government to give me a matching post,” said Vijay, the London Olympics silver medallist in rapid fire pistol.

Even though he is completing his BBA degree from the Manav Rachna University in Faridabad, Vijay pointed out that by virtue of having served 15 years in the Indian army, he was considered a graduate, as per the rules.

Hailing from Hamirpur in Himachal, Vijay had volunteered to retire from the army two years ago as a Subedar Major, and was pursuing openings for a good post.

“The chief minister Jai Ram Thakur called me to convey that the cabinet had taken the decision to give me the DSP post and that I could expect the order soon,” said Vijay, who has been competing with the younger lot to stake his claim in the national squad.
