The number of one-day internationals played by M.S. Dhoni since making his debut for India on December 23, 2004 at the M.A. Aziz Stadium in Chittagong. He then was run out first ball for a golden duck! He has now appeared in 297 ODIs for India from 2004 to 2017 and also in three one-day games for Asia XI in June 2007.
The number of Indians who have appeared in 300 or more ODI games. Dhoni is the latest to reach the landmark. The others are: Sachin Tendulkar (463), Rahul Dravid (344), Mohd. Azharuddin (334), Sourav Ganguly (311) and Yuvraj Singh (304). Dhoni, meanwhile, is also the 20th player to appear in 300 or more ODI games.
For the record, seven Sri Lankan players have appeared in 300-plus ODIs — the most for any country!

The year when Sri Lanka won an ODI bilateral series last against India. It was in August when Sri Lanka won the four-match ODI series 3-0. This means Sri Lanka has never won an ODI bilateral series against India during the Mahela, Sanga and Malinga era!

The number of ODI centuries for Virat Kohli in 185 innings, which means he has a hundred every six innings. Only Sachin Tendulkar (49 centuries in 452 innings) and Aussie Ricky Ponting (30 in 365 innings) have more ODI centuries than Kohli. While Kohli took 185 innings to reach his 29th ODI century, Tendulkar took 265 innings and Ponting needed 330 innings!

The number of 200-plus partnerships Virat Kohli has been involved in, in ODIs. This is by far the most by any batsman in ODI history. The next best is seven 200-plus stands by Ricky Ponting (Australia) and Upul Tharanga (Sri Lanka) .

The number of bowlers who have claimed 300 or more ODI wickets. Lasith Malinga is the latest bowler to reach the milestone. He is the fourth Sri Lankan bowler to have achieved the mark, the others being M. Muralitharan (534), Chaminda Vaas (400) and Sanath Jayasuriya (323). For the record, Malinga became the eighth paceman to achieve the milestone and the fifth quickest to do so.

The number of times the Indian batsmen have managed to score back-to-back centuries in ODI cricket. In all, nine Indian batsmen have achieved this, with Virat Kohli doing so the most number of times for India — four — while Rohit Sharma, in the fourth ODI at the Premadasa Stadium, doing so for the third time.

The number of times M.S. Dhoni has been not out in 258 innings in his ODI career. This is the most by a batsman in ODI cricket. In the fourth ODI against Sri Lanka in Colombo (August 31), he went past South Africa’s Shaun Pollock (72 in 205 innings) and Sri Lanka’s Chaminda Vaas (72 in 220 innings).

The margin of defeat (by runs) at the Premadasa Stadium in the fourth ODI is Sri Lanka’s biggest at home. The previous was also against India by 147 runs at this same venue, on February 3, 2009.

QUERIES CORNER England’s two leading wicket-takers in Tests, James Anderson and Stuart Broad, opened the bowling in the recent Headingley (Leeds) Test against West Indies. When did this last happen in Tests? During the 1963 Test series against West Indies, Fred Trueman and Brain Statham opened the bowling for England in the opening Test in Manchester and in the final Test at The Oval. Then, they were the leading Test wicket-takers not only for their country but also the world with 284 and 245 wickets respectively. Recently Shahid Afridi scored the maiden T20 century of his career for Hampshire. Did he take the longest time to reach his maiden T20 century? Shahid Afridi took 222 innings to register his maiden T20 century, 13 years after his debut in this format in July 2004. His 101 came off just 43 balls, with seven sixes and 10 fours, for Hampshire against Derbyshire at Derby in the recent T20 Blast tournament. He has taken the maximum innings by any batsman to record his maiden T20 century. Afridi surpassed the previous record held by another Pakistani, Umar Akmal, who had taken 187 innings to register his first T20 century (September 2016 for Lahore Whites). Following these two is Virat Kolhi, who needed 181 innings to register his maiden hundred for RCB during the 2016 IPL. Sometime in the mid-1970s, Karnataka’s Sanjay Desai and Roger Binny had made a record opening stand of 400-plus in a Ranji Trophy match. Does this record still stand? Sanjay Desai and Roger Binny had put on an unbeaten 451-run partnership against Kerala in Chickmagalur in November 1977. It was then a record for the opening wicket in the Ranji Trophy. The pair held the record until January 1995, when Delhi’s Ravi Sehgal and Raman Lamba, against Himachal Pradesh at the Kotla, put on 464 runs for the first wicket, which is still the Ranji Trophy record. However, the Desai-Binny stand is still the highest unbeaten opening stand in first-class cricket history. How many batsmen have made double centuries in T20 cricket? In school and club cricket there have been several instances of batsmen making double centuries in a T20 game. In fact, in February this year, 21-year-old Delhi Ranji Trophy batsman Mohit Ahlawat scored 300 off 72 balls, with 39 sixes and 14 fours, in a local 20-over club game in the Friends Premier League at Lalita Park in east Delhi. Otherwise, in official T20 games, Chris Gayle’s unbeaten 175 for RCB against Pune Warriors in Bengaluru on April 23, 2013, is the highest.
