Queries Corner

On how many occasions have both captains in a Test also kept wickets in the same match? — Adil Hussain, Ahmedabad

The recent Test in Dubai provided the fifth time when both captains in a Test match were also the wicketkeepers. In all, it has occurred on eight occasions in Tests. Here are the details.

* Twice in Tests for Lee Germon (New Zealand) and Andy Flower (Zimbabwe) in January 1996.

* Once in Tests for Khaled Mashud (Bangladesh) and Mark Boucher (South Africa) in October 2002.

* Twice in Tests for Khaled Mashud (Bangladesh) and Ridley Jacobs (West Indies) in December 2002.

* Twice in Tests for Denesh Ramdin (West Indies) and Mushfiqur Rahim (Bangladesh) in September 2014.

* Once in Tests for Sarfraz Ahmed (Pakistan) and Tim Paine (Australia) in October 2018 (in Dubai).

How often has India won a Test match by an innings? When did it achieve its first ever innings victory in Tests? Also, which opponent has lost by an innings to India on most occasions? — Srihari Rao, Visakhapatnam

India’s biggest Test win by an innings and 272 runs in Rajkot was its 42nd such instance in Test cricket. India’s first ever innings victory (innings and eight runs) came against England at Chepauk in Chennai on February 10, 1952. This, incidentally, was India’s first ever Test win!

Among India's, opponents, Sri Lanka has lost to India by an innings on most occasions — 11 times. Sri Lanka is followed by England and West Indies with six each, Australia and New Zealand with four each and Pakistan, Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, South Africa and Afghanistan with one.

Prithvi Shaw has a century on his first-class debut and also on his Test debut. Is he the first to do so? — Milan Shirke, Mumbai

Prithvi Shaw is, in fact, the third batsman to achieve this rare feat. India’s Gundappa Viswanath was the first to do so in Tests. He made 230 on debut for Mysore in 1967-68 and then two years later made a 137 on his Test debut against Australia in 1969-70. The second batman to emulate Viswanath was Aussie Dirk Wellham. He made an exact 100 on debut for New South Wales in 1980-81 and a few months later he made 103 on Test debut against England at the Oval in 1981.

In the Rajkot Test, 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw scored a century, while 29-year-old Ravindra Jadeja (he will be 30 in December) also hit a century in the same innings. Has it ever happened in any other Test that a teenager and and a much older player scored a century in the same innings? — B. K. Harinath, Mysuru

There are few such instances in Test cricket history. But the maximum difference in age for such an instance that I could locate was between Zaheer Abbas (35 years, 164 days), when he scored 168 not out against India in Lahore in 1982-83, while Saleem Malik (19 years, 264 days) made 107 in the same innings.
