India’s tryst with history

The Indians celebrate after defeating Sri Lanka in the second ODI in Mohali.

100

The number of occasions India have managed to post 300+ total in ODI cricket. They, thus, became the first team in ODI history to achieve this landmark, in the match against Sri Lanka in Mohali, where they scored 392/4. It’s worth mentioning here that among Test-playing nations, excluding Bangladesh, India was the last team to record a 300+ total in ODIs on April 15, 1996. Therefore, India’s tally since then is even more impressive compared with other teams during this period: Australia (89), South Africa (74), Pakistan/Sri Lanka (62), England (51), New Zealand (47) and West Indies (30).

The table below lists teams that have managed to cross the 300-run mark at least once in ODIs.

8

India’s successive ODI series victories since their last bilateral series defeat in Australia in January 2016. However, India are still behind the ODI record held by the West Indies, who from May 1980 to March 1988, had won 14 successive bilateral ODI series. This sequence of eight is India’s best in their ODI history.

The tables below provide the details.

The run aggregate achieved by India’s Shikhar Dhawan in the Visakhapatnam ODI. This makes him the 15th Indian and 106th overall to achieve the landmark. For the record, the first to reach this landmark was West Indian Viv Richards on April 14, 1985 — 32 years ago! By achieving this landmark in 95 innings, Dhawan becomes the sixth quickest in ODI history and the second quickest among Indians, after Virat Kohli (93 innings), to do so. The table below has all the details.

THIS WEEK IN 1984

On January 6: The fifth and final Test against Pakistan in Sydney was the last day of their Test careers for the three Aussies — Dennis Lillee, Rodney Marsh and Greg Chappell. Interestingly, they all had made their Test debut in the same series, against England in 1970-71.

At the end of their last Test, the three held the Test world record for:

* Most wickets by a bowler (Lillee, 355)

* Most dismissals by a wicket-keeper (Marsh, 355)

* Most catches by a fielder (Chappell, 122)

QUERIES CORNER

In the Perth Ashes Test, England lost by an innings despite scoring 400+ in the first innings. How often has this happened in Tests?

— Rajesh Kamath, Chennai

Batting first and making a total of 400+ and yet losing by an innings has happened on six occasions in Test cricket. England have the dubious distinction of doing so on four occasions, including three times in the last 12 months! The full list:

In the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka, India made 112 in Dharamsala, and in the next match posted a huge total of 392/4. Have such totals in successive matches been registered before?

— Vijay Tiwari, Delhi

India, in August 2008, at the Premadasa in Colombo were dismissed for a paltry 103 in 26.3 overs. In their next match against England three months later, in November, India made 387/5 in Rajkot.

Five English bowlers conceded over 100 runs in Perth. Is this the most 100+ conceded by bowlers in a Test?

— S. Kartik, Vellore

Five bowlers conceding 100+ runs in an innings has happened before in Tests — on seven occasions. But the dubious record is held by Zimbabwe bowlers. In May 2004, against Sri Lanka (713/3 decl) in Bulawayo, six of the seven bowlers used by Zimbabwe conceded over 100 runs (Note: the seventh bowler delivered just one over while conceding 5 runs!).

The last time Australia lost a Test at the ’Gabba was in November 1988. What has been their record since then at this venue?

— Mohammad Arif, Jamshedpur

Since their last loss to the West Indies in November 1988, Australia has played 29 Tests since December 1989, won 22 and drawn 7 (%win 75.86).
