New Milestone: M. S. Dhoni in action during the T20I against England on July 6 — his 500th international appearance.

6:

The number of teams who have the distinction of registering 200+ scores in successive matches in T20I cricket. India became the sixth side to do so at Malahide in Dublin – both coming against the hapless Irishmen.

T20I sides registering totals of 200+ in successive innings:

Note:
New Zealand’s next game at the Oval two days later on 27 June 2013, was washed out, with New Zealand not able to bat.

All the above totals came in the first innings of the match.

4:

The number of batsmen to aggregate 2000 or more runs in T20I cricket. Virat Kohli at Manchester became the latest to reach this landmark in T20I history. Interestingly, the last two to do so, Malik and Kohli were able to achieve the landmark in a matter of three days – all during the first week of July, while Martin Guptill, did so earlier this year in January.

The 2000 run club in T20Is

+ He also appeared for a World XI

Notes:

** Rohit Sharma 76 innings, 83 matches is 14 short of 2000 runs (Age 31y-68d, Span 10y-9m-10d)

** Virat Kolhi is the quickest to reach the above landmark in fewest matches and innings. He is also the youngest and the quickest to reach the landmark in fewest days.

1117:

The number of runs scored between Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma for the opening wicket for India in T20Is. This pair now has the highest aggregate between any opening pair in T20I history.

500:

The number of international matches played by MS Dhoni since his debut for India against Bangladesh at Chittagong on 23 December 2004 in an ODI match, when he was run out of the first ball he faced for a duck! Actually he has appeared in 497 internationals for India and three for an Asia XI (in ODIs). He thus became the ninth player (and third Indian after Sachin Tendulkar 664 and Rahul Dravid 509) to appear in 500 or more matches in international cricket.

The table below progressively charts his international career while reaching each landmark.

Queries Corner

Q1. How many batsmen have been dismissed on a golden duck in IPL 2018? – Ravi Shetty, Chennai

A1. In all were 42 instances of batsmen been dismissed first ball (golden duck) in IPL 2018. There was also one instance of a batsman (Colin Munro for Delhi Daredevils) being dismissed (run out) without facing a ball! Mumbai Indians’ skipper Rohit Sharma had the dubious distinction of being dismissed first ball on three occasions, while seven others did it twice!

Q2. Lokesh Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav scored a century and claimed a five wicket haul in the Manchester T20I match. Have two players from the same side done this before? – Ajit Kumar Goyal, Kolkata

A2. The efforts of Lokesh Rahul (101*) & Kuldeep Yadav (5/24) at Manchester were the second such occasion in T20Is. The first occasion came at Durban when South African Morne van Wyk made an unbeaten 114, while his teammate David Wiese claimed a fifer (5/23) in the same match against the West Indies on 14 January 2015.

Q3. In the Ranji Trophy match played between Holkar & Mysore in March 1946, Holkar declared their 1st Innings at 912 for 8 wickets. Is this the highest score in Ranji trophy match? And also out of the first eight batsmen, six of them scored centuries. Is this a record too? – BK Harinath, Mysuru

A3. Holkar’s 912/8d in 1946 was then an Indian first-class record and also it was then the fourth highest total in first-class history. Today, it is the joint seventh highest total in first-class cricket and the joint second highest in Indian first-class history. In January 1994, Hyderabad had amassed 944/6d against Andhra at Secunderabad, which is now the highest total in Indian cricket. Before that in January 1989, Tamil Nadu had also made 912/6d against Goa at Panaji to equal Holkar’s effort.

However, the six centuries by Holkar batsmen in 1946 is still a world record in first-class cricket. Only three teams have come close with five centuries in an innings.

Q4. Has any Sri Lankan pace bowler captained the side? – Raju Kharat, Pune

A4. If you are referring to genuine pace bowlers (excluding all-rounders) then the following have done so.

In ODIs: Lasith Malinga (1 match in Aug 2017). Could also include Chaminda Vaas (1 match in Jan 2006), if you don’t classify him as an all-rounder.

In T20Is: Lasith Malinga (9 matches from 2014 to 2016)

In Tests: Suranga Lakmal (1 match in June 2018)
