FEDERER DOWNS NISHIKORI TO REACH QUARTERFINALS

Swiss 17-time Grand Slam champion >Roger Federer advanced to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open with a gruelling five-set victory over Japan's Kei Nishikori on Sunday.

Federer will now play Andy Murray's conqueror Mischa Zverev after winning 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.

MURRAY KNOCKED OUT

World No. 1 >Andy Murray suffered a huge upset to 50th-ranked Mischa Zverev to follow Novak Djokovic to the exit as the shocks kept rolling at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Murray was never expected to be troubled by the 29-year-old German, who has never won an ATP title, but he lost 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in his earliest Melbourne departure in eight years.

Zverev's serve-volley triumph blows the draw even wider open with the top two seeds out before the quarter-finals for the first time in a Grand Slam since the 2004 French Open.

TSONGA ENDS EVANS RUN

Frenchman Jo-Wilfred Tsonga ended Dan Evans dream run at the Australian Open, as he defeated the Brit 6-7, 6-2, 6-4, 6-4 to progress to the quarterfinal.

WAWRINKA BEATS SEPPI 7-6, 7-6, 7-6

Former winner Stan Wawrinka needed three tiebreak sets to overcome Italy's Andreas Seppi and reach the quarter-finals.

The Swiss fourth seed edged out the 89th-ranked Seppi, 7-6 (7/2), 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/4) in two hours 44 minutes on Margaret Court Arena.

Wawrinka's victory sets up him for a match with either former finalist and French 12th seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Britain's unseeded Dan Evans in the last eight.

The Swiss leads Tsonga 4-3 and Evans 1-0 in their previous head-to-heads.
