French Open: Rain holds up Nadal, Sharapova

Heavy rain brought an early end to play on the second day of Roland Garros on Monday, forcing defending champion Rafael Nadal and two-time winner Maria Sharapova to return on Tuesday.

When the covers were drawn just before 2000 (1800 GMT), Nadal was 6-4, 6-3, 0-3 up on Italian lucky loser Simone Bolelli as he started his bid for an 11th French Open title.

Sharapova didn't even get on court for her opener against Richel Hogenkamp of the Netherlands.

Wozniacki gets past Collins

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki stormed into the second round with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over Danielle Collins. The Dane will face Georgina Garcia Perez in the next round.

Erratic Azarenka knocked out

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka crashes out of the French Open with a 7-5, 7-5 loss to Katerina Siniakova. The 28-year-old Belarusian committed a ghastly 38 unforced errors in her first match at Roland Garros in two years. ( Report )

Ferrer ousted

Spaniard Jaume Munnar came back from two sets down to beat compatriot David Ferrer 3-6, 3-6, 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4), 7-5 in a marathon match that lasted four hours and 19 minutes.

 

Djokovic through to second round

 

Novak Djokovic opened his French Open campaign with a comfortable 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Brazilian Rogerio Dutra Silva. ( Report )

Wawrinka sent packing

Last year's runner-up Stan Wawrinka has been knocked out, losing to Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-3.

Wawrinka, who won the French Open title in 2015, suffered a second loss to Garcia-Lopez in Paris after losing at the same stage four years ago. ( Report )

'Lucky loser' Trungelliti downs Tomic Bernard Tomic is sent packing by 'lucky loser' Marco Trungelliti. Trungelliti drove a 1,000 km, all the way from Barcelona to Paris late last night to defeat Thiem 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

 

Kvitova stages stunning comeback to reach round two

Two-time Wimbledon champion and eighth seed Petra Kvitova surges into the second round after a remarkable comeback to defeat V. Cepede Royg 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.

Osaka into second round

Japan's Naomi Osaka fired 10 aces on her way to a 6-2 7-5 first-round victory over American Sofia Kenin. The 21st seed will next face Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan.

==> Petra Kvitova wins the second set 6-1 to take her opening match against Verónica Cepede Royg into the third set.

==> Former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka loses a tight first set Katerina Siniakova. Naomi Osaka wins the first set and recovers from a break down to level the second against Sofia Kenin.

==> Carla Suarez Navarro, the 23rd seed, is through to the second round with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Ana Konjuh, while eighth seed Petra Kvitova is down a set against Verónica Cepede Royg.

Day 2 is underway at Roland Garros, with Petra Kvitova taking on V. Cepede Royg in her round-one match. In the men's section, Stan Wawrinka is up against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, while Benoit Paire is facing R. Carballes Baena.

Day two has some interesting match-ups to look forward to, starting with the defending champion Rafael Nadal getting his title defence underway against Simone Bolelli. ( Full day 2 schedule )**

Jelena Ostapenko, Johanna Konta and Venus Williams were the three big names in the women's section to exit the tournament on day one. ( REPORT )
