Divij Sharan qualifies for Halle Open doubles

Divij Sharan and Marcelo Demoliner will play Austria's Oliver Marach and Jurgen Melzer in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday, while Prajnesh Gunneswaran lost in the first qualifying round at Queen’s Club.

India’s Divij Sharan and Marcelo Demoliner of Brazil on Monday secured the lone qualifier spot in doubles at the €2,219,150 Halle Open in Germany.

The pair beat Matthew Ebden of Australia and American Denis Kudla 6-4, 6-4 at the ATP 500 tournament.

Sharan and Demoliner will play the Austrian duo of Oliver Marach and Jurgen Melzer in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, India’s top-ranked singles player, lost in straight sets in the first qualifying round of the Queen’s Club Championships in London. He was beaten 1-6, 4-6 by the much lower-ranked James Ward of Great Britain.

Doubles qualifying final round: Marcelo Demoliner (Brazil) and Divij Sharan (India) beat Matthew Ebden (Australia) and Denis Kudla (USA) 6-4, 6-4. First round: Demoliner and Sharan beat Laslo Djere (Serbia) and Benoit Paire (France) 6-2, 6-7 (1), 10-8.

Queen’s Club, England:

Singles Qualifying first round: James Ward (Great Britain) beat Prajnesh Gunneswaran (India) 6-1, 6-4.

Singles first round: Khumoyun Sultanov (Uzbekistan) beat Arjun Kadhe 6-2, 6-4; Altug Celikbilek (Turkey) beat Vijay Sundar Prashanth 6-3, 6-4.
