Tata Open Maharashtra Day 6 Highlights: Ramkumar-Raja crash out in semis

Hello and welcome to highlights of the Maharashtra Open in Pune. I'm Lavanya and I will take you through the action this evening. Our correspondent Anjana Senthil brought us  updates from Pune.

Day in brief: In the men's singles ties, Jiri Vesely fought strong winds and a spirited Berankis to seal his place in the final of the Maharashtra Open. He will face Egor Gerasimov who beat James Duckworth in his semifinal tie. In the men's doubles, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Purav Raja lost to Jonathan Erlich and Andrei Vasilevski. It's been the mood of the business end of the tournament, yesterday and today. The players who get the loudest cheers have had to say their goodbyes early. MS Semifinal 1: J. Veselý beat R. Berankis 6-7, 7-6, 7-6.  MS Semifinal 2:  Egor Gerasimov beat James Duckworth 7-6, 6-4 MD Semifinal 2: J. Erlich/A. Vasilevski beat P. Raja/R. Ramanathan 7-6, 6-4

Men's Doubles semifinal 2: J. Erlich/A. Vasilevski vs P. Raja/R. Ramanathan It's all over for the Indians in the Maharashtra Open. Ramkumar Ramanathan and Purav Raja lose to J Erlich and Vasilevski, 6-7, 4-6. Purav Raja and Ramkumar Ramanathan have dropped the first set which also went into a tiebreak. 7-6 (7-3) to Erlich and Vasilevski. At the moment, the first set stands tied 6-6. The first semifinal took place yesterday where Andre Goransson/ Christopher Rungkat beat Romain Arneodo/ Andre Begemann 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).  The duo will meet the winner of this tie between Erlich/Vasilevski and the Indian duo of Raja and Ramanthan. Men's Singles semifinal 2: James Duckworth and Egor Gerasimov Gerasimov prevails to take the led 6-4. Australian James Duckworth bids farewell to the Tata Open Maharashtra. Gerasimov will face Vesely in the final tomorrow. The Belarusian player has taken the lead in the second set too. He leads Duckworth 5-4. Gerasimov edges Duckworth to take the first set 7-6 (7-2). Nearly every set going into a tiebreak here. From on evenly-contested game to another. Duckworth, Gerasimov are also matching each other every step of the way. 3-2 to Duckworth so far in the first set.

Men's Singles semifinal 1: J. Veselý vs R. Berankis Strong show here from Vesely to take the set and ergo the game. Through to the final of the Maharashtra Open here, Jiri Vesely. Takes the set 7-6 (9-7). Up next, we will see who joins him in the final tomorrow as James Duckworth and Egor Gerasimov battle it out for a spot in the summit clash.

If you want quick games, look away from the Maharashtra Open folks. We are going to be here for a while. 6-6 in the set so far. 6-6 in this game too.

The third set is just as close. 6-5 to Berankis now. I am rooting for another tiebreak.

Vesely takes the second set decisively, but not before another tie break here too. 7-6 (7-3) to Vesely. This means both have a set each to their names and will now go into a decider set.

 

Thrilling first set win for Berankis. Looks like the winds were not with Vesely for this one. Attempts at wit aside, this was a set pushed to its limit with Berankis winning 7-6 (10-8).

Anjana reports: It's quite windy out here at the Balewadi Sports complex in Pune. Something seems to have gone inside Jiri's eyes. He's tried splashing water, and rubbing the eye with a towel. He has called his physio. Could there a break in momentum for the player from Czech Republic?
