Home favourite Dominic Thiem fell at the first hurdle as the top four seeds were knocked out in the second round of the Generali Open on Wednesday.

Thiem was beaten in three sets by Martin Klizan, the qualifier getting off to a flying start to prevail 6-1, 1-6, 7-5, breaking in the final game to settle the match.

"The first set was really bad, but then I played better. Sets two and three were okay, [but] it's very bitter for me," said Thiem.

"The atmosphere was great in the stadium today, there were some good rallies. It could have been a great start into the tournament, but losing it in the end is very disappointing."

Fourth seed Robin Haase had set the tone for the day when he was beaten 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in Wednesday's opening match by Jaume Munar, who will now meet Taro Daniel.
