Recap 2018: The highs and lows of May

From Chennai Super Kings' third IPL title to Real Madrid's third successive Champions League victory.

Chennai Super Kings on its return after serving a two-year ban, won the IPL title for the third time.

Highs:

Ireland became the 11th Test-playing country on May 11, when it hosted Pakistan for its inaugural Test at The Village, Dublin.

Shane Watson's superlative century helped Chennai Super Kings win its third Indian Premier League (IPL) title on May 27, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final by nine wickets.

India women's hockey team won the silver medal at the Asian Champions Trophy after a narrow defeat to South Korea in the final.

Real Madrid beat Liverpool in the Champions League final in Kiev on May 26 to lift a third consecutive title.

Real Madrid won the Champions League for the third successive year.

 

Manchester City lifted its third Premier League title and became the first team in English top-flight history to rack up 100 points in a season.

Barcelona won its 25th La Liga title in Ernesto Valverde's first season in charge of the Catalan club.

Massimiliano Allegri-managed Juventus won a seventh straight Scudetto, edging Napoli by four points.

Bayern Munich maintained its hegemony in Germany by romping to a sixth straight Bundesliga title.

Alexander Zverev won the Madrid Open on May 13, beating Dominic Thiem in straight sets in the final.

Rafael Nadal put the disappointment of Madrid Open, in which he lost at the quarterfinals, by winning the Italian Open a week later, on May 20.

Dominic Thiem won the Lyon Open by beating home favourite Giles Simon in a three-set thriller.

Jason Day won the Wells Fargo Championship by birdying two of the last three holes. This was his 12th career US PGA title and the second of the year.

Aaron Wise won the AT&T Byron Nelson by shooting 6-under 65 to beat Marc Lieshman by three strokes.

Webb Simpson won THE PLAYERS Championship by four shots after 1-over 73 final round. This was his fifth PGA Tour win.

Justin Rose claimed a three-stroke victory at Fort Worth Invitational, his ninth PGA title.

Lows:

Neeraj Chopra came fourth in the men's javelin throw event at Doha Diamond League, finishing behind the German trio of Thomas Rohler, Johannes Vetter and Andreas Hofmann.

B. Sai Praneeth lost to eventual finalist Jonatan Christie in the semifinals of the New Zealand Open Badminton Championship.

Sameer Verma went down to the eventual winner of the New Zealand Open Badminton Championship at the quarterfinals stage.

Indian badminton experienced another low in the month of May with India failing to qualify for the knockouts of the Thomas and Uber Cup.
