Asian Games Day 6: Gold for India in tennis and rowing
India won two gold medals on day 6. The Indian men's rowing team secured gold medal in men's quadruple sculls and Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan won gold in tennis mixed doubles.

7:59pm: FULL-TIME! India 8 – 0 Japan. Dilpreet, SV Sunil and Vivek Sagar, Akashdeep score one goal apiece, while Rupinder and Mandeep scored two each to take India’s goal tally in the tournament to 51 and third cleansheet for Sreejesh as India stands top of Pool A.

5:43pm: (TENNIS): Prajnesh Gunneswaran goes down in straight sets to world no. 75 Denis Istomin (2-6,2-6). He'll have to be content with a bronze.

5:28pm (BOXING): Good news from the boxing ring. India's Manoj Kumar beats Bhutan's Sangay Wangdi 5-0 and progresses to the pre-quarterfinals in the Welter 69kg category.
5:17pm (BOXING): India's Manoj Kumar is in action against Bhutan's Sangay Wangdi in the Men's Welter 69kg Round-of-32 match.
5:00pm (TENNIS): Denis Istomin asserts his supremacy over India's Prajnesh Gunneswaran as he wins the first set 6-2 in 51 minutes. The Indian now has a mountain to climb.
4:55pm (BADMINTON): In some good news for India on the badminton courts, Ashwini Ponnappa and N Sikki Reddy have advanced to the quarterfinals after getting the better of Malaysia's Mei Kuan Chow and Meng Yean Lee 21-17, 16-21, 21-19.
4:50pm (SWIMMING): India's Sandeep Sejwal finishes seventh in the 50m breast-stroke final. He finished with a time of 27.98, 0.91 seconds behind the leader and the gold medalist Japan's Yasuhiro Koseki.
4:42pm (BOXING): Gaurav Solanki runs out of steam as he succumbs to a 5-0 loss to Ryomei Tanaka in the men's Fly (52kg) round of 32 clash.
4:40pm (TENNIS): Istomin has raced to a comfortable 4-1 lead over Prajnesh now. The Indian has looked patchy at times and will have to pull up his socks for a shot at victory.
4:30pm (BOXING): India's Gaurav Solanki will soon take on Japan's Ryomei Tanaka in their round of 32 clash in the men's Fly (52kg).
4:15pm (TENNIS): Prajnesh Gunneswaran is in action in the men's singles semifinals. He is taking on Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin.
3:45pm (SQUASH): Sourav Ghosal bounces back from a game down to beat Harinder Pal Sandhu 3-1 in the men's quarterfinal. He will meet Hong Kong's Ming Chun Au in the semifinals. So, we have another medal assured. Now it is left to see whether Joshna Chinappa will join both Dipika and Ghosal in the semifinals. Most likely, she will.
3:41pm (GYMNASTICS): Dipa Karmakar finishes fifth in the Women's Balance Beam final with a score of 12.500. Yile Chen of China wins Gold with a score of 14.600. This isn't Dipa's pet event, but she has given her best.
3:35pm (BADMINTON): Kidambi Srikanth bows out of the Games. He loses to Hong Kong's Vincent Wong 21-23, 19-21. Catch the LIVE updates of the match here .
3:32pm (SQUASH): Sourav Ghosal takes the lead at 2-1 over Harinder Pal Sandhu.
3:30pm (GYMNASTICS): Dipa Karmakar comes up with a decent performance clocking 12.500 points. She is currently placed third with three more athletes yet to showcase their skills.
3:20pm (SQUASH): Easy outings for Dipika Pallikal-Karthik. She beats Japan's Misaki Kobayashi 3-0 to advance into the semifinals. One medal is assured in squash as the losing semifinalists get a bronze medal. Dipika will play former World No. 1 Malaysia's Nicol David in the semifinal.
3:15pm (BADMINTON): Kidambi Srikanth loses two game points to lose the first set to Hong Kong's Vincent Wong. Catch the LIVE updates of the match here .
3:13pm (GYMNASTICS): Dipa Karmakar in action in the Women's Balance Beam Final.
3:07pm (SQUASH): The all-Indian quarterfinal is deadlocked at 1-1. Harinder Pal Sandhu won the first game while Sourav Ghosal has crawled back into the match to restore parity.
2:55 pm (ARCHERY): Heartbreak for India again. Iran proves to be India's nemesis. Indian archers (Jyoti Surekha and Abhishek Verma) lose to Iran 155-153 in the Compound Team quarterfinal. This is a huge upset, atleast by the standards of how the Indians were performing over the years. A slip-up in the third set (40-37) seems to have cost India the match here and the archers are eliminated from the Asian Games.

2:50pm (SQUASH): The Indians are out on the court. It will be Harinder Sandhu vs Sourav Ghosal now.
2:30pm (ARCHERY): Indian archers — Jyothi Surekha and Abhishek Verma — are battling it out against Iran in the Compound Mixed Team quarterfinal match.

2:15 pm (KABADDI): India has lost out on another kabaddi gold medal. India loses to Iran 27-24 in the women's gold medal match. ( As the match happened ). India did manage to get close but lost in the dying moments of the game. The scenes around are just amazing. The Indians are breaking down in sorrow while the Iranians are breaking down in joy. This is what sport can do to you! One action, many emotions!
2:05pm (SQUASH): The Indians will be out on the squash courts shortly. We will have Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal-Karthik and an all-Indian quarterfinal in Saurav Ghosal and Harinder Pal Sandhu.
1:50pm (SAILING): The Indian sailors are ready. We have Varsha Gautam / Sweta Shervegar in the 49er FX Women and Varun Thakkar / Ganapathy Chengappa in the 49er Men. Can they wade through the rough waters? Will be it be a smooth sailing for them? Stay tuned and find out.

1:00pm (FENCING): India goes down to China in the women's Epee team quarterfinals 25-45. India started well with 21-year-old Jyotika Dutta winning her first match against Mingye Zhu but that would be only be it. The Chinese won the next eight matches to triumph.
12:54pm (WEIGHTLIFTING): Again, not so good news from the lifting arena for India. Rakhi has reds in all three attempts. All hopes of progressing and a medal vanish in thin air as she registers a zero in the Snatch category.
12:50pm (WEIGHTLIFTING): We have Rakhi Halder in action. A planned snatch of 93 kg and 120 kg in Clean & Jerk.
12:00 pm (SHOOTING): This is Heena Sidhu’s first individual medal at the Asian Games. She was seventh — at one point — and staring at an early elimination but her grit and talent helped her crawl to the top part of the standings. Heena had won medals in team events — 2010, 2014 — earlier.
LOOKING BACK: Ahead of the Asian Games, this is how Heena Sidhu trained and said: Heena’s day begins with a mental training session at 6 am and is followed by intense sessions at the range. “The camp has four days of training and one day rest in between,” said Heena. “Apart from all this, I am ensuring a healthy balanced diet to manage the load and get a good night’s sleep for proper recovery.” |
11:54am (SHOOTING): BRONZE for Heena Sidhu . With a total of 219.2, Heena manages a podium finish. She had an inconsistent start but managed to pull closer to the top with three scores of more than 10 in the first series.
She had a poor second series but managed to crawl back with some good scores of 9.8, 10.6, 10.6, 10.3, 10.5, 10.0, 10.1, 9.7, 10.3, 10.2, 10.8 in the second stage to win the bronze. Qian Wang of China wins the Gold with a Games record of 240.3.
11:52am (SHOOTING): A medal assured for India as Heena Sidhu survives in the 10m Air Pistol Final event. Heena is now placed third, just a fraction of a second behind the China's Qian Wang and Korea's Minjung Kim.
11:49am (SHOOTING): Curtains for an inconsistent Manu Bhaker as she is eliminated from the 10m Air Pistol Final event with a score of 176.2, after six series in the second stage.

11:42am (TENNIS): Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan give India its 6th gold medal of Asian Games 2018 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over the Kazakh pair of Bublik Aleksandr and Denis Yevseyev.
11.41am (SHOOTING): In not so good news for India, both Heena Sidhu and Manu Bhaker have been off the mark in the 10m Air Pistol Final. While Heena is placed seventh after two rounds, Manu is slightly better, at fifth. The Indians need to pull up their socks for a podium finish.

11:10am (PENCAK SILAT): India's Naorem Boynao Singh has gone down 5-0 to Philippines's Dumaan Dines in the men's class B 50-55kg quarterfinal.
11:07am (TENNIS): The Indian pair of Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan is 4-1 up against Kazakhstan pair of Bublik Aleksandr and Denis Yevseyev in the gold-medal match.
10:58am (SHOOTING): Anish Bhanwala is 3rd with 293 points and Shivam Shukla is 11th with 289 points at the end of Stage 1 of men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol.

10:54am (HANDBALL): India wins a thriller against arch-rival Pakistan in the men's Group 3, with a difference of one goal (28-27). This is the second win for the team in the Group, having beaten Malaysia in the first match.
Did you know: The Indian handball men’s team had its best finish at the 1982 Games in New Delhi, placing eighth. This was the first time India had participated in the sport. India skipped handball for the next five editions, then finished 12th in 2006, ninth in 2010 and 14th in 2014. |
10:02am (HANDBALL): India leads Pakistan 14-12 at the end of the first half, with Adithya Nagaraj finding the net five times.
10:00am (TENNIS): China's Qiang Wang wins gold in women's singles, beating compatriot Zhang Shuai in straight sets (6-3 6-2) in the final.
9:50am (ARCHERY): Abhishek Verma and Jyoti Surekha are through to the last-eight of the compound mixed team event. India beat Iraq 155-147 (40-36, 37-36, 39-38, 39-37) to advance. India will now meet Iran in the quarterfinals.
9:45am (HANDBALL): India pulled level against Pakistan, before conceding two goals in quick succession, in the men's handball Group 3 match. It currently trails the arch-rival 6-8.

9:35am (ROWING): The Indian men's rowing team narrowly misses a medal, finishing 4th in the men's lightweight eight event.
9:30am (SWIMMING): Srihari Nataraj, Sandeep Sejwal, Sajan Prakash, and Aaron Agnel have missed out on a spot in the 4x100m medley relay finals, finishing 9th in heats with a time of 3:44.94.
9:05am (ROWING): Sawaran Singh, Dattu Bhokanal, Om Prakash and Sukhmeet Singh have secured gold medal in men's quadruple sculls. This is India's 5th gold of the Asian Games 2018. ( Medals tally )

Dattu Bhokanal's mother was ailing when he took part in Rio Olympics, and in the same year she passed away. The 27-year-old from Talegaon in Nashik district was devastated and did not touch the rowing boat for a long time. Dattu's journey to an Asiad gold has been nothing short of phenomenal.

8:25am (SWIMMING): Advait Page comes 1st in men's 1500m freestyle heats with a time of 15:29.96.
8:05am (ROWING): Dushyant Chauhan secures bronze in men's lightweight single sculls with a timing of 7:18.76.
7:42am (SWIMMING): Sandeep Sejwal comes first in Heat 1 of the men's 50m breastsroke with a time of 27.95 seconds and qualifies for the final.
7:32am (SHOOTING): Shivam Shukla and Anish Bhanwala are competing in the men's 25m rapid fire pistol qualifying round and Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu are involved in the women's 10m air pistol qualifying, both of which are underway.
Day 5 produced a couple of major surprises for the Indian contingent, with 15-year-old Shardul Vihan winning silver in trap shooting but the Indian men's kabaddi team, which was expected to clinch gold, losing to Iran in the semifinals.
