Dutee Chand on same-sex relationship: 'Everyone's mind works differently'

India sprinter Dutee Chand became the first openly gay athlete in the country earlier this year.

Dutee spoke about her sexuality on a public platform for the first time at Forbes' 30 under 30 event on Friday.

"It's one's personal life. But everyone's mind is not the same. [Society's] views on same-sex relationship have changed. Supreme Court has also relaxed the law. According to me, I liked a girl and she liked me too. So our relationship was going well," said the 23-year-old.

Hailing from Jajpur district in Odisha, Dutee said she faced objection from her family regarding her sexuality.

"My family was supportive earlier but my elder sister never supported me. She always said the relationship wasn't a nice thing and always asked me to let it go. She said if people hear about it, it would be difficult for the family.

"I have thought about ending the relationship (over what my sister pointed out) many times but I was never able to do it," said Dutee, who won silver medals at both 100m and 200m at the Asian Games last year.
