Fabio Fognini proved one seed too many for Yannick Hanfmann as the Italian claimed a 6-4 7-5 victory in the Swiss Open Gstaad final on Sunday.

World No. 170 Hanfmann eliminated third seed Feliciano Lopez, Joao Sousa (8) and Robin Haase (6) to reach his first final on the ATP Tour, but Fognini (4) avoided the same fate.

It is a fifth tour-level title for the Italian, all of which have come on clay surfaces, and his first since triumphing in Umag over a year ago.

Fognini staved off two break points as he charged into a 5-1 lead in the opening set, but Hanfmann showed a sign of resistance by reducing the deficit in game eight.

After serving out the set to love, Fognini found the going tougher in the second and was unable to convert either of the first two break points that came his way.

The Italian crucially edged ahead in game 11 and Hanfmann found the net on match point to end his remarkable run in the Alps.
