Sindhu, Li named athlete ambassadors for IOC's 'Believe in Sports' campaign

P. V. Sindhu and Michelle Li have been global ambassadors for BWF's ‘I Am Badminton’ campaign since April last year.

World champion P.V. Sindhu has been nominated as athlete ambassador alongside Canada’s Michelle Li for the International Olympic Committee’s 'Believe in Sport' campaign aimed at preventing competition manipulation. This means the two champion shuttlers will be working with others nominated for the same cause raising awareness among athletes and their entourage. It may be mentioned here that Sindhu, who has been preparing for the forthcoming Malaysian and the Singapore Opens, and Li have been global ambassadors for the Badminton World Federation ‘I Am Badminton’ campaign since April 2020. The 25-year-old Rio Olympics silver medallist says being an ambassador for such a cause is important not just to her but to the sporting fraternity itself.

“I always believed in playing the sport in a fair way without any manipulation, cheating or resorting to doping,” she said after another grinding, fitness session at the Suchitra Academy. “Yes, this honour also means huge responsibility and gives us a platform to tell the world about the importance of playing any sport in the true spirit,” she said. “Any sport has to be clean and devoid of any dubious means, no matter whether you win or lose,” she added. “Being athletes we understand and know the value of sport being played the way it should be,” she concluded. In a way it has not come as a surprise to Sindhu’s family given the clean reputation she enjoys and also for her remarkably gentle behaviour even under pressure.
