BFI allows pro boxers to compete in domestic amateur events

In line with the International Boxing Association (AIBA) relaxation to allow professional boxers to compete in amateur events, including the Olympics, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has decided to permit professional boxers to participate in state, national and inter-departmental tournaments.

The decision, taken by the BFI executive committee recently, will be applicable with immediate effect and all boxers who have boxed professionally in the past can seek relief under this note, BFI secretary general Jay Kowli said in a circular issued to the affiliated units.

"However, this relaxation will not apply to boxers (sic) participating/participated in any such tournaments that are organised/conducted by unauthorised/unrecognised bodies or are not recognised by BFI. Such boxers will still need to apply to BFI through their respective BFI member units for a 'No Objection Certificate'," said the circular.
