Former national boxing champion Dennis Swamy passes away

Former national boxing champion, Dennis Swamy, passed away on Tuesday afternoon following a massive stroke at his residence in Artillery Centre (Golconda) here. He was 74.

Dennis Swamy was also former coach at the then Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, training his wards at Gymkhana Ground.

Former national boxing champion, Dennis Swamy, passed away on Tuesday afternoon following a massive stroke at his residence in Artillery Centre (Golconda) here. He was 74.

Swamy was rated during his era as “one of the most scientific boxers” the country has ever produced.

He was also former coach at the then Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, training his wards at Gymkhana Ground. Swamy was also conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1968.

He always moaned at missing the opportunity of missing the Tokyo Olympics for non-sporting reasons. “I was a certainty and even presented with the India blazer for the Games. But, at the last minute, my name was excluded from the Indian squad. That was the saddest day in my life,” he said during an interview with Sportstar a few years ago.

Former SAI boxing coach Emani Chiranjeevi, Sports Authority of Telangana boxing coach Omkar Yadav, boxing officials Jayaram Reddy, B.D. Manmohan, were among those who expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.
