BRICS rapid chess: Sethuraman finishes second

India’s S. P. Sethuraman finished runner-up at the inaugural BRICS rapid chess tournament at Baoji, China. He finished with 6.5 points from nine rounds, half a point behind the champion Yu Yangyi, who was also the top seed.

It was a splendid effort by Sethuraman, who had begun the round-robin event as the seventh seed and lost the first game to the eventual winner.

His compatriot Surya Shekhar Ganguly finished sixth in the tournament in which players from the world’s five major emerging national economies – Brazil, India, Russia, China and South Africa – competed.

The standings: 1. Yu Yangyi (Chn) 7; 2. S.P. Sethuraman (Ind) 6.5; 3-5. Alexander Motylev (Rus), Vladimir Potkin (Rus) and Li Chao (Chn), 5.5; 6-7. Surya Shekhar Ganugly (Ind) and Rafael Leitao (Bra) 4.5; 8. Alexandr Fier (Bra) 4; 9. Robert Steel (SA) 1.5; 10. Daniel Cawdrey (SA) 0.5.
