World Blitz: Karjakin, Muzychuk triumph

Russia’s Sergey Karjakin and Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk emerged as the World blitz chess champions in Doha on Friday.

It was a sweet revenge for eighth-seeded Karjakin, who pushed top-seed and reigning champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway to the second spot. Carlsen had beaten Karjakin at the World Championship (classical time control) in New York recently.

Former champion Viswanathan Anand finished inside the top 10. As for the other Indians in the fray, Surya Shekhar Ganguly was placed 34th, M. R. Lalith Babu 46th, Vidit Gujrathi 64th, B. Adhiban 70th, Debashis Das 77th, Neelotpal Das 95th and M.R. Venkatesh 100th.

For Muzychuk, it was her second World title in three days in Doha; she had won the rapid championship. India’s Dronavalli Harika took the fifth place, while Koneru Humpy finished 10th.
