Commonwealth Games 2018, Day 3: As it happened

Sathish Sivalingam and Venkat Rahul Ragala added two more gold medals to India's tally on day three of the Games.

5:41 pm: India ends day three on a high with Venkat Rahul Ragala bagging the fourth gold medal and tally to six. The day started for India with a gold, won by Sathish Sivalingam, again in weightlifting in 77kg. Tomorrow could turn out to be a big day with shooters lined up for action, until then goodbye.

Squash: Joshna Chinappa loses 5-11, 6-11, 9-11 to Joelle King of New Zealand in quarterfinal.

Gold: Men (85kg) Venkat Rahul Ragala

Mixed Team Event: India beat Mauritius 3-0.

Men: India played out a 2-2 draw with Pakistan.

Boxing

Women: Sarita Devi (60kg) beat Kimberly Gittens to reach quarterfinals.

Men:

Manoj Kumar (69kg) beat Tanzanian boxer to reach quarterfinals.

Husamuddin Mohammed (56kg) beat Boe Warawara of Vanuatu to enter quarterfinal.

Gymnastics

Men’s Individual All-Around Final- Yogeshwar finished 14th.

Women’s Individual’s All-around final -Aruna Bedda Reddy finished 14th; Pranati Das finished 16th.

Swimming

Men: 50m Backstroke: Srihari Nataraj finishes fifth iin semifinals. Fails to qualify for the finals.

200m Butterfly: Sajan Prakash finished eighth in finals.

Basketball

Men: India lost to England 100-54.

Cycling

Men’s 15km Scratch Race Qualifying Heats- Manjeet Singh finished 13th.

Men’s Sprint Qualifying: Sanuraj Sanandaraj finished 20th; Ranjit Singh finished 21st; Sahil Kumar finished 22nd.

Women's 25km Points Race Finals: Monorama Devi Tongbram finshes 22nd. While, Sonali Mayanglambam did not start the race.

Squash

Women’s Singles Classic Plate Quarter Final: Dipika Pallikal conceded a walk over to Samantha Cornett.

Women's Singles: Joshna Chinappa loses to Joelle King of New Zealand in quarterfinal.

Lawn Bowls

Women’s quarterfinals- India lost to Malta 11-13.

Men’s Pairs Sectional Play: India lost to Norfolk Island 7-17.

4:30 pm: Venkat Rahul Ragala clinches a
GOLD for India in 85kg weightlifting. So this is fourth weightlifting gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. India's medal tally now adds up to six and all of them coming from weightlifting.

 

4:22 pm: Good news coming from the boxing ring. Manoj Kumar is through to the quarterfinal of men's 69kg with win over Tanzanian boxer.

4:20 pm: Top stuff again from the Indian weightlifter as Venkat lifts 187kg this time in the Clean & Jerk category.

4:13 pm: Great lift! Venkat Rahul in his first attempt successfully lifts 182kg in Clean & Jerk.

3:49 pm: India's Husamuddin Mohammed beats Boe Warawara of Vanuatu to enter quarterfinal of men's 56kg boxing.

 

3:22 pm: In swimming, India's Sajan Prakash finishes last in men's 200m butterfly finals.

3:10 pm: Venkat Rahul succeeds to lift 151kg in snatch third attempt after failing in the second. The lift puts Venkat and India in the second position, as the action now moves to Clean & Jerk.

3:02 pm: Venkat Rahul Ragala makes it looks easy, lifts 147kg in first attempt snatch. Meanwhile, defending champion Richard Patterson crashes out of men's 85kg weightlifting.

2:22 pm: At the end of the first quarter, India women's basketball team leads Malaysia 25-20.

 

2:14 pm: Sarita Devi progresses to quarterfinals in women's 60kg boxing, beating Kimberly Gittens of Barbados 5-0.

2:13 pm: Earlier in the day, India’s Dipika Pallikal gave a walkover to Canada’s Samantha Cornett in the women’s squash classic plate quarterfinal.

2:06 pm: Sarita Devi's round of 16 bout against Barbados's Kimberly Gittens is underway.

2:02 pm: The India women's basketball team is up against Malaysia, having lost 57-66 to Jamaica yesterday.

1:58 pm: Defending squash Commonwealth Games champion Nick Matthew bows out at the quarterfinal stage, losing 3-2 to Adnan.

1:45 pm: The final of men's 85kg weightlifting is coming up, with India's V. Ragala featuring in it. And in women's 60kg boxing round of 16 bout, Sarita Devi takes on Kimberly Gittens.

1:29 pm: Australia men's hockey team beats South Africa 4-0 in a pool A match.

1:04 pm: (Cycling) Manjit Singh finishes 13th in men's 15km scratch qualifying.

12:53 pm: A story of how the India men's hockey team relinquished a 2-0 lead against arch-rival Pakistan.

11:45 am: India's Vandna Gupta failed to lift 104kg in her second and third clean and jerk attempts. She finishes fifth with a total lift of 180kg in women's 63kg weightlifting!

11:31 am: GOAL and Pakistan draws the match against India! Finishes India 2-2 Pakistan, which scored off the final shot of the match with a penalty corner which was awarded after much scrutiny by the video umpire. India must be gutted to not win that match after having been 2-0 up!

11:21 am: Three consecutive penalty corners for Pakistan, which doesn't make the most of any of them and the score remains India 2-1 Pakistan. Close to eight minutes of the final quarter left.

11:11 am: With a quarter of the match left, India leads Pakistan 2-1. We're set for a thrilling final quarter and the match potentially going all the way down to the wire.

11:02 am: GOAL, for Pakistan! Irfan Jr. deflects a delicious cross in from the left to halve India's lead. India's arch-rival has grown into his match and we're in for a thrilling end!

10:50 am: India’s Sajan Prakash narrowly qualified for the final of swimming men’s 200 metre Butterfly event, recording a timing of 1:58.87 seconds and finish fifth in Heat 2 of the qualification round

10:43 am: India goes into half-time 2-0 up against Pakistan, which posed a goal threat towards the end of the second quarter.

10:39 am: SAVE! The Indian goalkeeper, P. R. Sreejesh, saves sensationally to keep his team 2-0 up. Pakistan carrying a greater threat in the last five minutes.

10:27 am: GOAL, India 2-0 Pakistan! Harmanpreet Singh the goal-scorer this time and the penalty corner was used to perfection by the Indian boys. Pakistan yet to get into this match.

10:20 am: End of the first quarter with India holding a 1-0 lead against Pakistan. It was completely dominant and deservedly got the goal with two minutes remaining.

10:17 am: Penalty corner to India! India fails to use what was its first penalty corner.

10:15 am: GOAL! Dilpreet Singh gives India the lead towards the end of the first quarter with a clinical finish. India 1-0 Pakistan.

9:50 am: Gymnast Yogeshwar Singh finished a disappointing 14th at the Gymnastics All Around final, totalling 75.600 after six rotations.

9:48 am: Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj has entered the semifinals of the men’s 50 metre backstroke, recording a time of 26.47 seconds to qualify in the ninth spot among 16 qualifiers in his category.

9:45 am: (updates) India will face Singapore tomorrow in the semifinals of team badminton at Commonwealth Games.

8:40 am: The Indian badminton team has beaten Mauritius 3-0 in the quarterfinal with Kidambi Srikanth beating Georges Julien Paul 21-12 21-14. Earlier, the pairs of Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy (women's doubles) and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty (men's doubles) beat A. M. E. Allet and N. Chan-Lam 21-8 21-7 and A. Lubah and C. J. Paul 21-12 21-3 respectively.

On day three, Sathish Kumar Sivalingam took his opportunity to win India its third gold medal at the Games, doing so in the 77kg weightlifting category with a total lift of 317kg.

The Indian weightlifting and badminton teams have, in particular, shone on the first couple of days. The former continues to secure the medals and remains the only discipline to have secured all of India's medals (five).
