Ashwin Achal reports After keeping Karun Nair company for a steady 25-ball 10, A. Mithun loses the plot. Just moments after Karun brings up his century, Mithun tries to slog left-arm spinner Aditya Sarvate and gets bowled. A thoroughly annoyed Karun slouches over his bat at the other end. Pretty silly stuff from Mithun, who should have continued his cautious approach, while giving Karun company. Skipper Vinay Kumar, suffering from severe cramps, is the next man in. He is struggling to run, which probably means that he will not bowl too many overs when Karnataka takes the field. |

Ashwin Achal reports Karun Nair (61 batting) and C.M. Gautam have ensured that Karnataka (160 for four) is virtually assured of taking the first-innings lead. Gautam (73), however, threw away a chance to get his first century of the season. In the last over before Lunch, Gautam cut a short and wide Umesh Yadav delivery straight to deep point. He immediately realised that he committed a huge mental error – cursing himself loudly as he walked off the field. Karun, on the other hand, was his usual measured self. He did have a moment of madness, when he attempted and missed a reverse-sweep to off-spinner Akshay Wakhare. The loud LBW appeal was turned down. Karun would do well to put his head down and make a big one here. The Vidarbha bowling, meanwhile, has been disappointing. There have been bad deliveries aplenty – no pressure has been mounted on the batters whatsoever. India pacer Umesh is not going at full tilt,perhaps in an effort preserve his best for the upcoming South Africa tour. His partner Rajneesh Gurbani has produced a few fantastic deliveries, but has not been consistent. Morning session, helpful Eden Gardens pitch, the fate of the match in the balance - and yet the bowlers have lacked the discipline to keep the ball in the right areas. If the Karnataka batsmen decide to stick around, the match could slip away from Vidarbha's grasp by the end of day's play. |
