3:14 pm: Vinay Kumar 13 (40) has put a price on his wicket. Nair 128 (227), on the other hand, is playing an innings to remember. Karnataka now lead Vidarbha by 82 runs.

3:00 pm: Karnataka 263/8, lead By 78 Runs, Vinay Kumar R 11(34) Karun Nair 127(223).

Karnataka reaches 247 for 8 at Tea, with a lead of 62 runs. Karun Nair is batting on 118 along with R. Vinay Kumar (batting 6).Ashwin Achal reports: The session belonged to Vidarbha, as their bowlers relegated Karnataka to 247 for eight, from 160 for four at Lunch. Speedster Rajneesh Gurbani (five for 82) has been mighty impressive. Karnataka batsmen Stuart Binny, Shreyas Gopal and K. Gowtham all fell to nicked drives. Shouldering arms would have been a far better option.

Ashwin Achal reports

After keeping Karun Nair company for a steady 25-ball 10, A. Mithun loses the plot. Just moments after Karun brings up his century, Mithun tries to slog left-arm spinner Aditya Sarvate and gets bowled. A thoroughly annoyed Karun slouches over his bat at the other end. Pretty silly stuff from Mithun, who should have continued his cautious approach, while giving Karun company. Skipper Vinay Kumar, suffering from severe cramps, is the next man in. He is struggling to run, which probably means that he will not bowl too many overs when Karnataka takes the field.

1:50 pm: Sarvate picks up Mithun 10 (25); Karnataka 225/8.

Karun's unbeaten 148 comprised 20 fours and a six.

1:35 pm: Karun Nair reaches his century. What a brilliant knock under pressure and crucial circumstances. When he came in to bat, Karnataka was three down for 17; Nair 100 (181), Karnataka 223/7.

1:07 pm: At the end of 60 overs, Karnataka 202/7; lead by 18 runs.

And that's a fifer for Gurbani!

1:05 pm: WICKET! Over: 59.5 Gowtham K 1(3) ct A V Wankhade b R N Gurbani, Karnataka 198/7.

12:50 pm: Gurbani picks his fourth, dismisses Shreyas Gopal 7 (13); fine catch by Fazal, Karnataka 192/6.

12:30 pm: WICKET! Stuart Binny c Wadkar b Gurbani 4 (12); Karnataka 174/5.

Ashwin Achal reports

Karun Nair (61 batting) and C.M. Gautam have ensured that Karnataka (160 for four) is virtually assured of taking the first-innings lead. Gautam (73), however, threw away a chance to get his first century of the season. In the last over before Lunch, Gautam cut a short and wide Umesh Yadav delivery straight to deep point. He immediately realised that he committed a huge mental error – cursing himself loudly as he walked off the field.

Karun, on the other hand, was his usual measured self. He did have a moment of madness, when he attempted and missed a reverse-sweep to off-spinner Akshay Wakhare. The loud LBW appeal was turned down. Karun would do well to put his head down and make a big one here.

The Vidarbha bowling, meanwhile, has been disappointing. There have been bad deliveries aplenty – no pressure has been mounted on the batters whatsoever. India pacer Umesh is not going at full tilt, perhaps in an effort preserve his best for the upcoming South Africa tour. His partner Rajneesh Gurbani has produced a few fantastic deliveries, but has not been consistent. Morning session, helpful Eden Gardens pitch, the fate of the match in the balance - and yet the bowlers have lacked the discipline to keep the ball in the right areas.

If the Karnataka batsmen decide to stick around, the match could slip away from Vidarbha's grasp by the end of day's play.

At lunch, Karnataka 160/4

Vidarbha speedster Umesh Yadav broke the Nair-Gautam partnership and picked up two wickets.

11:30 am: Lapse of concentration and that's the end of Gautam 73 (125). Umesh Yadav strikes; Karnataka 160/4.

11:20 am: Gautam is looking to play a bigger innings here, unbeaten on 71, he is finding the gaps and rotating the strike. Smart cricket by Karnataka. They wouldn't want to lose a wicket before lunch.

11:00 am: At the end of 40 overs, Karnataka 140/3; Nair 56 (104), Gautam 58 (91).

10:52 am: And that's a half-century for Nair too. He reaches his 50 in 98 balls, Karnataka 133/3.

10:35 am: And that's a fine half-century from Gautam. He held his nerves and paced his innings, complementing Nair; Karnataka 128/3 (36), Nair 48 (93), Gautam 54 (79).

10:05 am: And that's 100 up for Karnataka; Nair 37 (72), Gautam 43 (59).

9:50 am: C.M. Gautam is playing a good hand here; this is a much needed partnership.

9:40 am: A lot will depend on how Karun Nair paces his innings today. Since Mayank Agarwal failed with the bat, Nair needs to up his game to take Karnataka home.
