Wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey, who scored the fastest half-century in the ongoing World Cup off 25 balls on Sunday, also became the quickest Australian to score a fifty in the history of the tournament.
The previous quickest was by Tom Moody and Shane Watson off 28 balls in the 1999 and 2007 editions respectively. Brendon McCullum of New Zealand is the fastest to score a fifty in World Cup history. He took only 18 balls against England in 2015 to reach the milestone.
In the ongoing World Cup, Chris Gayle (vs Pak) and Jos Buttler (vs Ban) got to fifties off 33 balls.
Chasing a massive target of 353 set by India, Alex Carey walked in after the fall of Marcus Stoinis (0) with Australia 238/5 in 39.6 overs. He kept Australia in the hunt although wickets kept tumbling at the other end and finally stayed unbeaten on 55.
India won the match by 36 runs.
