9.10 pm: India needs 21 off 23 balls. Pat Cummins is into his last over.

9.00 pm: Dhoni and Jadhav bring up the 100-run partnership. IND 200/4 (43.5)

8.53 pm: Jadhav completes his fifth ODI fifty, India needs 43 off 42 balls now.

8.46 pm: The required rate is slowly coming below 6, Jadhav and Dhoni look set. India should be able to finish this; there is still Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja down the order.

FACTBOX Dhoni and Jadhav had shared a 121-run stand for the fourth wicket in the Melbourne ODI against Australia in January that helped India win the series. Dhoni had remained unbeaten on 87, Jadhav on 61.

8.27 pm: FOUR! Dhoni is breaking free; continuing from where he left in Australia. He has quickly moved to 39 off 49 balls (4x4, 6x1).

8.25 pm: SIX! Dhoni's first six of the innings. Coulter-Nile gets the treatment; 73 needed off 75 balls.

8.16 pm: Dhoni-Jadhav complete 50-run stand, India reaches 150; 87 needed off 88 balls.

8.11 pm: India is 139 for four after 34 overs, needs a further 98 runs from 96 balls. Kedar Jadhav and M. S. Dhoni have put together a 40-run stand for the fifth wicket.

7.52 pm: India needs 111 off 118 now. Dhoni batting on 11, Jadhav on 18.

7.31 pm: Quick fact: Zampa picked up three wickets in an ODI international after 14 games.  The last one came against Pakistan in 2017.

Our correspondent, V.S. Aravind, reports from Hyderabad Adam Zampa's double blow has dented India's chase as the leg-spinner has removed Virat Kohli and then Ambati Rayudu. Nathan Coulter-Nile too delivered a telling blow as he dismissed Rohit Sharma. The set batsmen are back in the hut and the onus is now on MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav to see India home. A couple of more wickets will put Australia on top but a partnership in this crucial passage of play will see India gaining back control. The 100 is up for India and it needs another 137 with six wickets in hand.

7.23 pm: WICKET! Zampa removes Rayudu. The ball had a bit of turn and bounce, caught by Carey.

7.10 pm: WICKET! This is a massive breakthrough for Australia. Rohit Sharma is out.

Coulter-Nile keeps it short, finds the leading edge of Rohit's bat; Finch doesn't miss many.

Kuldeep post first innings: "The first 10 overs were crucial. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami bowled really well. I am coming back after a break, so it took time to get back into rhythm. The wicket is slow, so I wanted to mix-up my slower. The wicket of Handscomb was special."

Our correspondent V.S. Aravind reports from Hyderabad Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav shared six wickets among themselves as India restricted Australia for 236/7 in Hyderabad. It was a clinical bowling execution from the home side after Australia asked India to bowl first. Usman Khawaja was the top-scorer for Australia with a 76-ball 50 and Glenn Maxwell contributed with a 51-ball 40 as the rest found it difficult to score on a relatively dry surface. India needs 237 runs to take a 1-0 series lead.

4.59 pm: Australia finishes at 236/7; Carey remains not out on 36.

4.54 pm: Back-to-back boundaries for Carey, Australia moves to 234/6.

4.50 pm: Fifty-run partnership comes up between Carey and Coulter-Nile; AUS 225/6 (48.5)

4.42 pm: Three overs to go; Carey and Coulter-Nile are having a go at everything. Bumrah will bowl the 48th.

4:29 pm: A top spell from Kuldeep Yadav comes to an end, with figures of 2 for 46. Australia 192/6 in 44 overs.

4:13 pm: OUT. Shami strikes again and this time with the big wicket of Glenn Maxwell for 40. A length ball and Maxwell plays it early across the line, to see his off-stump knocked back. Australia six down.

4.03 pm: WICKET| A slower off-cutter beats Turner who wanted to slog across the line; beautifully bowled by Shami.

Turner departs for 21 off 23 (4x1, 6x1); AUS 169/5 (37.5)

FACTBOX Ashton Turner is not really new to the Indian conditions. Six years ago, Turner was part of the Perth Scorchers side, captained by Simon Katich, that was in India for the Champions League Twenty20. Jason Behrendorf was part of the same side. Turner’s professional T20 debut for Scorchers in CLT20, which was against Highveld Lions, was however abandoned.

4.01 pm: Turner is playing a good hand, batting on 21 off 23, and supporting senior pro Maxwell. The right-hand batsman had failed to make a mark in the T20Is; this innings will give him some confidence going into the remaining games. And while I write this, Shami runs through his gate.

3.35 pm: WICKET! Flight in the air, Handscomb — notably the best player of spin in the Australia side — steps out and misses; stumped by Dhoni.

Our correspondent V.S. Aravind reports from Hyderabad Kuldeep Yadav strikes and breaks a steady stand as he removes the well-set Peter Handscomb. The batsman dances down the track only to be lured as the ball goes past through the gap and MS Dhoni as usual whips off the bails. India has taken two quick wickets but Glenn Maxwell holds fort for Australia. A crucial phase in the game as debutant Ashton Turner walks in. Ravindra Jadeja into the attack as he replaces Jasprit Bumrah.

 

DID YOU KNOW? Maxwell’s last ODI fifty (62) came against England in June 2018. It’s been quite a while, but he has been getting the 30 and 40-odd runs on a regular basis. However, Kuldeep will remain Kohli’s go-to bowler if India has to dismiss Maxwell before he starts cutting it loose.

 

Handscomb departs for 19 off 30 (4x1); AUS 137/4 (31.2)

3.20 pm: Kohli brings on his strike bowler Bumrah against Maxwell... and it nearly works! He gets an edge of Maxwell and it goes in between Dhoni and second slip Rohit Sharma.

Indian spinners have tightened the screws here. Last 5 overs have yielded only 16 runs for the loss of two wickets.

3.09 pm: WICKET! Khawaja throws away a good start. Khawaja comes down the track and chips it down to deep mid-wicket to Vijay Shankar, who mkaes good ground to take a superb catch! The Aussie departs for 50. T20 centurion from Bangalore Glenn Maxwell joins Handscomb.

2.57 pm: WICKET! Kedhar Jadhav does it again! Stoinis smacks a long hop straight to Kohli at mid-wicket! He hit that fiercely and the momentum of the shot took Kohli off his feet. Good grab by the skipper. Peter Handscomb is the new man in.

2.50 pm: Jadhav and India appeals for a bump-ball catch of Stoinis. TV replays confirms the doubt. Not out.

2.39 pm: Spin from both ends now. Jadeja and Kedhar Jadhav, who Simon Doull describes as 'right-arm all sorts', are bowling in tandem. Can Jadhav work his magic for Kohli?

2.28 pm: Twenty-six runs in the last four overs for Australia, taking it to 49 for one after 12 overs. Usman Khawaja looking to assert himself more and more, while Marcus Stoinis continues to play the sheet anchor. The left-hander hit Kuldeep Yadav for a six in his first over and, at the other end, Vijay Shankar is offering boundary balls that Stoinis, in particular, has taken full advantage of.

2.10 pm: Australia is 23 for one after eight overs. Usman Khawaja is trying to open up and transfer the pressure onto the Indian new-ball bowlers. After a couple of quiet overs, he struck Jasprit Bumrah for a couple of fours — one through extra-cover and another through point — to get the innings going. The first bowling change for India, with Vijay Shankar coming into the attack.

1.56 pm: Australia is 13 for one after five overs. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are in great rhythm and Marcus Stoinis and Usman Khawaja have been cautious after the loss of Aaron Finch.

1.36 pm: WICKET! No landmark innings from Finch. Bumrah with a ripper to the Aussie skipper of just his third ball, takes the outside edge to Dhoni!

1.30 pm: Mohammed Shami begins proceedings for India with the ball against Usman Khawaja.

Australia skipper Aaron Finch is playing in his 100th ODI. Fortunately for him, there is no Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who dismissed him three times out of three down under, in India's ranks to spoil his party early on. A Finch special to start the series?
