Carlos Alcaraz began his title defence with a 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-2 win over Estonian qualifier Mark Lajal in first round of men’s singles on the opening day of Wimbledon 2024 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), London on Monday.

World No. 1 and top seed Jannik Sinner was forced to dig deep in his 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann. Sinner faces fellow Italian and 2021 finalist Matteo Berrettini in the second round.

In women’s singles, second seed and reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff comfortably made it to the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over fellow American Caroline Dolehide.

Former US Open champion and local favourite Emma Raducanu, awarded a wildcard, defeated lucky loser Renata Zarazua of Mexico 7-6(0), 6-3 in her first match at the grass Major since 2022. Raducanu was supposed to face Ekaterina Alexandrova but the 22nd-seeded Russian pulled out of the tournament with an injury.

Third and 16th-Belarusians Aryna Sabalenka and Victoria Azarenka also withdrew due to injuries. Their spots were taken by Russia’s Erika Andreeva and France’s Elsa Jacquemot, respectively.
