Bayliss expects Cook to remain as England captain

In November, Alastair Cook revealed that his captaincy could last another two months or even a a year.

England coach Trevor Bayliss expects Alastair Cook to stay on as captain, despite hinting he could stand down following the ongoing tour of India.

Speaking last month, Cook said "it could be two months, it could be a year" when asked about his future as skipper.

However, Bayliss believes the 31-year-old — England's record-holder for Test runs, caps and matches as captain — will lead the side into the 2017-18 Ashes series.

"He's talking about the next Ashes series and being out in Australia," Bayliss told BBC Test Match Special.

"Sometimes there are little comments made along the way and they get blown out of all proportion.

"He's certainly up for the fight. I haven't had any discussion with him any other way and that's what we've been working towards.

"I was as surprised as anyone when I saw that in the papers."

England is 2-0 down to India ahead of the fourth Test in the series, which gets under way in Mumbai on Thursday.
