"Stuart Broad has strained a tendon and one of the small joints in his right forefoot. The injury will be reviewed further at the end of the Test," an England media statement said on Saturday.

However, Broad, who rattled the Indian top-order with his twin strikes in the final session on Day Three, will "continue to bowl" in the rest of the innings.

Broad, 30, also got Indian opener K. L. Rahul for a duck in the second over of the match but struggled as the game progressed. His injury scare has added to the woes of a team already missing leading paceman Chris Woakes, who is nursing a knee injury.

Woakes' replacement James Anderson has just returned to action after recovering from a shoulder injury. England has Steven Finn and Jake Ball in the squad as pace backup for the marathon five-match series.
