Jennings: 'England squandered a good position'

England opener Keaton Jennings admitted that his team had squandered a good position at Edgbaston on Wednesday. "It has been a little bit of a missed opportunity for us," he said.

"But then you look, after 85 overs with an old ball, there still seems to be quite a lot of lateral movement. From our point of view, we've got [nearly] 300 on the board — and if we can come out and be pretty relentless in the way we go about hitting our areas, at some point tomorrow, you don't actually know what a good score is until both sides have batted."

Jennings, who made a century on Test debut in Mumbai, handling India's spinners adroitly, was full of praise for R. Ashwin. "Ash is a very good bowler. He lands the ball in the right area, varies his pace — in India, I suppose there are more balls that can get you out, with the surfaces turning. He bowled a good ball to Cooky (Alastair Cook) this morning, which maybe came down to a little bit of tackiness in the surface. I've played 'Ash' a couple of times, when he played at Worcester last year," he said.

The pitch had not been completely easy to bat on, Jennings stated. "It was a little bit tacky this morning, started out a little bit damp, and it just felt like the odd ball held in the surface. I think spin and seam will play a huge part in the series," he said.
