Former player Pravin Hingnikar is still in-charge of the pitch preparation, but he is working under the supervision of the BCCI representative, Taposh Chatterjee.

Censured by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for preparing a rank turner for the Test against South Africa that ended in three days in November 2015, the VCA is trying to make a pitch that will see action on all five days.

Two years ago, the ICC had labelled the pitch as ‘poor’. The Indian spinners — R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra — took 20 wickets and India win by 124 runs.

The Indian team’s coaching staff and a few players had a good look at the pitch before they proceeded towards the net area outside the main stadium.

The ground staff was busy on Wednesday evening, with one of them using a water sprinkler right through the length of the pitch.
