India is the joint-most successful team in the history of the tournament with Australia having won the title thrice. In the last edition of the tournament in 2016 held in Bangladesh, India lost the final to West Indies.

A preparatory camp will be held in Bengaluru from December 8 to 22. Mumbai's Shaw and Bengal's Porel have been permitted to join their respective Ranji Trophy sides for the quarterfinal stage and will join the camp on 12th December.

The selection committee has also named five players, who will be on standby.

The 18-year-old Shaw has been a prolific run getter for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, and the BCCI’s decision to release him for the quarter-finals, will strengthen the Mumbai team that will be without Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Shreyas Iyer (all selected for the ODI series against Sri Lanka) and fast bowler Shardul Thakur who injured his bowling hand shoulder in the last league match against Tripura and has been ruled out for three weeks.

Porel has played two Ranji Trophy matches for Bengal and he has taken ten wickets, against Punjab and Vidarbha.
