Proteas’ Phangiso suspended for illegal bowling action

CSA confirmed that Phangiso would not be selected for the first two home T20s against Australia , but will remain in the squad and work towards remoulding his action.

South Africa left-arm spinner Aaron Phangiso has been suspended from bowling in domestic cricket by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after an independent assessment found his bowling action to be illegal. The 32-year-old underwent assessment in Pretoria, where all of his deliveries exceeded the 15-degree level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) further confirmed that Phangiso would not be selected for the first two home T20Is against Australia, starting from Friday. He, however, would remain in the squad to work alongside South Africa’s spin bowling coach Claude Henderson and CSA’s high performance manager Vinnie Barnes in an effort remould his action.

“The timing of this issue for Aaron and for our World T20 squad is clearly inopportune but we need to deal with it. We will work hard to remedy Aaron’s action and have him retested as soon as practically possible. We are fortunate to have an ICC accredited Laboratory in South Africa and this will certainly make a quick turnaround possible,” CSA’s chief executive, Haroon Lorgat was quoted as saying. Phangiso will now only be allowed to play in next month’s World T20 after undergoing a second round of independent tests next week.

Earlier, Phangiso had been reported for a suspect illegal bowling during his side Highveld Lions’ win against the Warriors in the semifinals of the Momentum One-Day Cup at the Wanderers.
