Afghanistan’s spinners have long been a cornerstone of the Indian Premier League, with stars like Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Mohammad Nabi dazzling fans with their skills. Now, 18-year-old Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar is set to join their ranks. Recently signed by Mumbai Indians for Rs 4.8 crore in the IPL auction 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Ghazanfar is poised to carry forward Afghanistan’s legacy of spin bowling excellence.
Ghazanfar made his ODI debut against Ireland in March, turning heads with his performances. He followed up with a three-wicket haul in a win over South Africa, and earlier this month, he delivered a sensational six-wicket performance against Bangladesh. His contributions were also pivotal in Afghanistan’s triumphant campaign at the Emerging Teams Asia Cup, where he took six wickets in four matches.
With his remarkable rise and undeniable talent, Ghazanfar is emerging as the next Afghan spinner to leave his mark on the grand stage.
Ghazanfar has already had a taste of the IPL experience. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ title-winning 2024 campaign, although he didn’t get to play a match. Ghazanfar was brought in as an injury replacement for his compatriot Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Despite not playing a game, Ghazanfar’s experience with the team will undoubtedly benefit him in his future IPL endeavors.
Ghazanfar is a familiar face in the T20 franchise circuit. He has claimed 29 wickets in 16 matches, conceding only 5.71 runs per over.
