En route to scoring a match-winning century that gave Royal Challengers Bangalore a last-over victory, Virat Kohli broke a record of a former Indian batting stalwart. He overtook Sachin Tendulkar to become the only IPL captain to thrice score more than 500 runs in a season.
Tendulkar had stellar seasons for Mumbai Indians in 2010 and 2011, scoring 618 and 553 runs respectively to become the only captain in the league to twice achieve the feat. In 2013 and 2015, Kohli scored 634 and 505 runs to equal Tendulkar.
This season, Kohli crossed the 500-run landmark in his eighth innings. He leads the run charts by a long margin – 124 runs – with second-placed Ajinkya Rahane having scored 417 runs in 10 innings.
Kohli’s century on Saturday was the second this season. The earlier one had been scored in a match that his team eventually lost, against Gujarat Lions.
Royal Challengers Bangalore plays its next match in the league against Kings XI Punjab on Monday.
