Shane Watson will lead Royal Challengers Bangalore in the absence of Virat Kohli, the franchise confirmed here on Monday. Kohli, whose shoulder injury will be assessed next week before a return date is determined, will miss the first few matches of the IPL.

“In the interim, Shane Watson, will lead the RCB team as the stand-in captain. Shane has been one of the top performers and a great mentor for the team, making him an ideal choice to lead the team this season till Virat is back on the field," said RCB Chairman Amrit Thomas in a statement.

In a late development, the franchise announced that A.B. de Villers will miss the season-opener against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday.
