Rahul Mankad, son of legendary Vinoo Mankad, passes away

Rahul was the last surviving son of the legendary Indian all-rounder Vinoo Mankad.

Rahul Mankad, the former Mumbai batter who was also the last surviving son of legendary cricketer Vinoo Mankad, passed away in London on Wednesday following a brief ailment. He was 66.

Rahul, the youngest of Vinoo’s three sons - all of whom played First-Class cricket, with Ashok representing India, was a top-order batter who scored 2,111 runs in 47 games between 1972-73 ad 1984-85, averaging 35.77 with five tons and 12 fifties.

Besides being a member of Bombay’s Ranji Trophy-winning team four times, he was part of the Duleep Trophy final in 1978-79.

Rahul, who ferried between England, Australia, UAE and his hometown, continued his family’s quest for avoiding the term “Mankading” while referring to a bowler into his delivery stride running out a non-striker backing too far.

He is survived by his wife Nishita, two daughters and their extended families.
