India opener Rohit Sharma, whose form was a bit of a concern in the ongoing Nidahas Trophy, answered his critics in style at the R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo on Wednesday. The right-hander not only slammed 89 off 61 balls against Bangladesh to take India to the final, he also broke Yuvraj Singh’s record of the most number of sixes (74) in T20 cricket by an Indian.

Currently, Sharma is on top of the table with 75 sixes.

Last year, Sharma hit the fastest T20 hundred (against Sri Lanka in 35 balls) and equalled David Miller's record (101 off 36 against Bangladesh). The Indian scored 118 off 61 balls. He hit 10 sixes in that innings.

The other Indian cricketers in the fray are Suresh Raina (54), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (46) and Virat Kohli (41).

In the overall list, Sharma is right behind Colin Munro (78) and Eoin Morgan (76) in the eighth position. Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi is at No 10 with 73 sixes.

Sharma — who leads Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) — also holds the record of the most number of sixes in a calendar year (64 in 2017). South Africa batting great AB de Villiers hit 63 in 2015.

With the IPL round the corner, Sharma will be keen to enter the tournament with some momentum.
