After parting ways with coach Chandika Hathurusingha, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has named Shakib Al Hasan as the Test captain for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka in January next year.

Following a dismal show in the tour to South Africa, speculations were rife that the BCB may finally chuck out Mushfiqur Rahim from captaincy, and on the expected lines, Shakib has been elevated to the top post, with Mahmudullah Riyad as his deputy.

With the position of head coach vacant, the BCB is currently interviewing candidates for the job, and it is learnt that former coach Richard Pybus is one of the frontrunners for the job. West Indies’ Phil Simmons, who previously worked with the Ireland and Bangladesh teams, is also in the contention.

However, the board president Nazmul Hassan on Saturday indicated that the series against Sri Lanka could go ahead without a head coach. In that case, an interim coach could be given the charge.
