Seam bowler S. Sharun Kumar is the big pick in the Tamil Nadu squad for the Vijay Hazare one-day tournament.
Pace bowling all-rounder Vijay Shankar will lead the 15-member squad that has been selected keeping in mind the availability of the players for the entire competition and fitness.
Sharun has been rewarded by the selectors for his excellent display in the VAP Trophy one-day competition where he picked 25 wickets at 14.48.
He was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with two five-wicket and a four-wicket haul.
The selection of mystery spinner C.V. Varun, another fresh face in the Tamil Nadu one-day squad, was on more expected lines given his outstanding display in TNPL and a good showing the VAP tournament where he adjusted to the demands of the 50-over game from the Twenty20 variety.
Although his base is off-spin, Varun can send down different kinds of deliveries and his release is not easy to pick.
Top-order batsman Kaushik Gandhi has been rewarded for his fine display in the VAP tournament where made 559 runs at 46.58. He brings solidity to the line-up.
Making a return to the squad is Shahrukh Khan whose 452 runs in the VAP Trophy came at a strike-rate of 97.83. He bats with power and flair.
The left-handed Anirudh Sitaram, who notched up 525 runs at a whopping average of 65.63 in the VAP competition, finds a place too.
The selection panel headed by S. Sharath has given plenty of weightage to form, fitness and availability.
The squad has six specialist batsmen, a seam bowling all-rounder and a wicket-keeper, both with immense batting ability, four pacemen and three spinners.
