The India U-19 World Cup-winning captain, Prithvi Shaw, was bagged by Mumbai North after starting with the base price of Rs. 1.5 lakh.

Thanks to his selection in the Rest of India squad for the next week’s prestigious Irani Cup tie against Ranji Trophy champion Vidarbha, Prithvi Shaw is set to miss the majority of the inaugural T20 Mumbai League. Still, the promising opener fetched Rs. 2.8 lakh during Saturday’s player auction.

The India U-19 World Cup-winning captain was bagged by Mumbai North after starting with the base price of Rs. 1.5 lakh. The same team also got hold of India Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, who along with Suryakumar Yadav, fetched the maximum permissible fees of Rs. 7 lakh each. Yadav is set to lead Mumbai North East.

Just like Shaw, India's white-ball vice-captain Rohit Sharma is set to miss virtually the entire T20 league, to be played at the Wankhede Stadium from March 11 to 21. However, Sharma, included in the list of icon players primarily as a branding exercise, was signed by Mumbai North West for Rs 6 lakh. Sharma, for the record, will be leading India's T20 side for the tri-series in Sri Lanka from March 6 to 18.

Tare unsold

Mumbai captain Aditya Tare found no takers in the auction, which started 45 minutes late than its scheduled start due to a little bit of chaotic organisation. The wicket-keeper-batsman is likely to miss the entire tournament, having injured himself in the DY Patil T20 tournament earlier in the week.

Veteran Abhishek Nayar and two of his wards – Shreyas Iyer and Siddhesh Lad – were all included in the list of the icon players. While Nayar and Lad were bought for their base price of Rs. 4 lakh by Mumbai South and Mumbai South Central, respectively, India star Iyer will be donning the Mumbai North Central jersey, having earned Rs. 5 lakh in the auction.
