Shubman Gill has been in prime form for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy.

Yuvraj Singh sees a place for promising Punjab batsman Shubman Gill in the Indian team sooner than later.

According to Yuvraj, a talented batsman like Shubman, one of the prolific run-getters in the Ranji Trophy this season, should win the India cap after the 50-over World Cup later this year.

“He is a special talent. After a long time there is a young guy whose batting I like to watch. He is very exciting. After the 2019 World Cup, he can make it to the (Indian) side. He should represent India for a long time but it depends on how well he is looked after,” said Yuvraj, who is here to play for Punjab against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy Group B match, on Sunday.

“Prime example is Rishabh Pant. When he got picked for India, everybody said he plays too many shots, is rash, doesn’t have the mind. But after one year of being in and out, after one IPL, he has now two Test hundreds overseas. You have to look after your talented guys andgive them the confidence to excel.”

Yuvraj lauded the Indian team on its back for doing well in the Test series in Australia.

“Very happy and really proud of the guys. Every time Australia has been a tough tour. Their (Australia's) experience in batting isn’t that much. But fantastic effort by the guys, (Cheteshwar) Pujara, (Virat) Kohli, (Jaspreet) Bumrah excelled and it was great to see Rishabh going down the order and scoring big runs. It's a great sign for Indian cricket.”

About his ambition of getting back into the Indian team for the World Cup, Yuvraj said, “After the Ranji Trophy, we have the T20s (Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy) and then the IPL. I want to give my best shot.”
