For former India captain and now HCA president, Mohammed Azharuddin, it was an experience with a difference — to be back in the thick of informal parleys of the BCCI senior officials and players in Mumbai on Monday after the ban slapped by the same body about two decades ago for alleged match-fixing allegations.
Wonderful experience
Reflecting on the circumstances, Azhar on Tuesday told
“The atmosphere has been very good, a lot of healthy discussions took place. Well, everyone’s priority is cricket and nothing else,” he said.
Azhar was not surprised by Sourav Ganguly — who incidentally made his Test debut under him in the 1996 Lord’s Test — becoming BCCI president. “He has been the front-runner for the post. He is a very good choice, with the right kind of attitude,” he said.

“I think everyone should rally around him and restore the pride and prestige of the BCCI which, like many State associations, has suffered a bit in the recent past,” he said.
“I am sure Ganguly will run the BCCI the way it should be and not in a haphazard manner, which was the case till now. Hopefully, a new system will be in place under his tenure,” the 56-year-old said.
Azhar said his focus at the moment is the HCA, and that he has a task on hand which he has to complete, come what may.
“I am here as HCA chief thanks to the support of all the secretaries. I look forward to their continued support in giving critical inputs to ensure free and fair administration,” he said.
Funds
Azhar added that like many other State bodies, he too expects funds to be released on time to ensure the game develops in the districts by way of creating infrastructure.
He reiterated that he will not tolerate any parent’s interference or influence in selection or cricket-related issues in Hyderabad. “Let the boy or girl enjoy the game, perform to be in contention for selection in any age group,” Azhar concluded.
