Vijay Hazare: Shreyas Iyer credits team togetherness for Mumbai's success

Mumbai's success was down to the togetherness of the players, captain Shreyas Iyer felt.

Captain Shreyas Iyer hailed Mumbai's emphatic Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign, which culminated in the side's triumph in the final.

"Amazing is the one word for it," Iyer said of his team's performance. "The consistency we have shown in the tournament has been brilliant from the first match. The lower order batsmen had hardly got a chance to bat but today when they got an opportunity, they showed what they were made of.

"Ajinkya (Rahane) and I were talking in the dressing room that they (Tare and Lad) would win us the game. Everybody in our team can bat and bowl. We are a perfect team and that is why we have won."

Iyer, who has previously led India-A and Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, reflected on his own journey as captain. "There have been ups and downs, but at the same time, I have learned a lot. I have got different roles in different teams. I feel I have grown well, adapted to the conditions and realized the mistakes that I was making; if I got out early, I corrected it in the next game."

The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium saw a good turnout for the final, perhaps due to the presence of India internationals on the pitch. It was important, Iyer felt, for India stars to play for their domestic sides. "When you see Rahane or Rohit Sharma come into the team, you're already motivated [as a player]. At the back of your mind, you believe that no matter the situation or the conditions, we're going to be safe. When you see them playing on this platform, you will get to see such a crowd."

Mumbai's success was down to the togetherness of the players, Iyer felt. “What sets us apart is that all of us gell really well,” he said. “Even off the field, we stay together. We cherish each other's success and play around with a few tantrums and fun.”

That team spirit was evident on Saturday.
