Southampton’s Shane Long scores fastest Premier League goal ever after seven seconds

The Irishman, playing for Southampton FC, achieved the feat in a match against Watford FC at Vicarage Road.

Shane Long scored the fastest goal in Premier League history during Southampton's clash with Watford on Tuesday.

The Republic of Ireland international closed down Craig Cathcart's attempted clearance and powered through to clip over Ben Foster after just seven seconds.

 

The previous record holder was Ledley King, who scored after 9.82 seconds during Tottenham's win over Bradford City in 2000.

King was watching Tottenham's game against Brighton on Tuesday when he discovered that his 19-year record had been broken.

After King's goal, the next fastest strike in Premier League history was scored by Alan Shearer after 10.52 seconds for Newcastle against Manchester City in 2003.

Christian Eriksen scored after 10.54 seconds for Tottenham against Manchester United last season.

Long has struggled for game time this season but his goal took his tally to four in just nine starts.
