His return to Old Trafford - from Juventus for a former world record transfer fee of 105 million Euros - has been the highlight of Paul Pogba’s Manchester United career so far. That number has been breached multiple times since and United is still waiting for its prodigal son to live up to the expectations.
In a difficult season for the team, where it is struggling at seventh in the Premier League table, Pogba's mistakes have been magnified. And the hot-and-cold relationship with manager Jose Mourinho has only added fuel to the fire, sparking speculations over both men’s future at the club.
But former Manchester United defender Wes Brown has backed Pogba, after he was dropped from the starting XI in United’s last two fixtures in the Premier League.
“The thing with Pogba is that everything he does in being highlighted a lot. The manager has probably thought he’s actually a lot better than how he's playing at the moment. And when he's rested him or dropped - whatever you want to call it - maybe he [Mourinho] wants him to think about it and show him how good he can be,” said Brown, who played at Manchester United between 1996 and 2011, under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.
“We all know Pogba is a class player and Sir Alex would've done no different. If a player is not playing to as good a level as everyone knows he can, the manager would do something about it.”
Wes Brown, who had an injury-laden career at United, knows a thing or two about a comeback and believes the French midfielder has the goods to return stronger for his team.
“I'm sure it's not gonna last. Cause we all know how good Pogba is. And, yes, he's not played as many games recently but soon that can change and he can play brilliantly.
“There are times when you're not playing too well yourself and that’s just the way football goes. You have ups and downs and your confidence is low and you just have to try and get it back.
I'm sure Pogba will come back even stronger,” he added.
