FIFA U17: Mexico held to 1-1 draw by Iraq

Striker Mohammed Dawood took Iraq ahead in the 16th minute with a fantastic effort but Mexico found the equaliser through Roberto de la Rosa in the sixth minute of the second half as the two-time champion managed to salvage a point.

Iraq picked its first point of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, holding former champion Mexico to a 1-1 draw in the second Group F match here at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday.

Having lost all its three matches in its previous appearance in the elite stage of the tournament in 2013 in UAE, the draw helped Iraq shake off the loser’s tag. Striker Mohammed Dawood took Iraq ahead in the 16th minute with a fantastic effort but Mexico found the equaliser through Roberto de la Rosa in the sixth minute of the second half as the two-time champion managed to salvage a point. Mexico had a few more scoring opportunities but failed to find the lead as the Iraq goalkeeper Ali Ibadi stood firm under the bar.
